  1. Thanks for joining me today for “A Little Walk with God.” I’m your host Richard Agee.
  2. It’s true that every journey starts with the first step, but if that’s the only step you take, you never get to your destination. The journey will never be complete.
  3. Scripture
    1. Revelation 3:1-6
    2. The One: Write down My words, and send them to the messenger of the church in Sardis. “These are the words of the One who has the seven Spirits of God, the Perfect Spirit, and the One who holds the seven stars:

“I know the things you do—you’ve claimed a reputation of life, but you are actually dead. Wake up from your death-sleep, and strengthen what remains of the life you have been given that is in danger of death. I have judged your deeds as far from complete in the sight of My God.  Therefore, remember what you have received and heard; it’s time to keep these instructions and turn back from your ways. If you do not wake up from this sleep, I will come in judgment. I will creep up on you like a thief—you will have no way of knowing when I will come.  But there are a few in Sardis who don’t have the stain of evil works on their clothes. They will walk alongside Me in white, spotless garments because they have been proven worthy.

“The one who conquers through faithfulness even unto death will be clothed in white garments, and I will certainly not erase that person’s name from the book of life. I will acknowledge this person’s name before My Father and before His heavenly messengers.

“Let the person who is able to hear, listen to and follow what the Spirit proclaims to all the churches.”

  1. Devotional
    1. For a few years I served as the senior medical observer/controller at the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk, Louisiana.
      1. Fancy title. Responsible for helping train medical units prepare to do provide their medical support in regions of conflict
      2. Need to be able to perform their medical mission to care for sick and wounded soldiers
      3. Also needed to defend themselves against an enemy that didn’t care about the Geneva Conventions
      4. Discovered it’s difficult to do either one and extremely difficult to do both at the same time
    2. Many units concentrated on one or the other
      1. Got overwhelmed with patients and forgot about their vulnerability against an armed force
      2. Protected against an enemy but forgot they needed to treat patients at the same time
      3. Most often defense is what went by the wayside as they executed their primary mission of patient care
    3. Put up what might look like a defense to some
      1. Razor wire around the facility, but not enough
      2. Guards at various points, but not looking at the right places
      3. Checks of vehicles coming in, but not checking well when chaos broke loose with several patients coming in at once
      4. Their work started but wasn’t complete
      5. It didn’t make the grade
    4. That’s what happened in Sardis
      1. They started
      2. They were excited at the beginning
      3. They set to work and looked good
      4. It got hard and they stopped before the work was done
      5. They let their defenses down
      6. The enemy broke in and stole their momentum, their enthusiasm, their life
    5. Jesus says, stay faithful, walk beside Him, He’ll acknowledge you before the Father and clothe you in spotless garments of white

Today’s Devotional

Luke 4:8
Jesus: Get out of My face, Satan! The Hebrew Scriptures say, “Worship and serve the Eternal One your God—only Him—and nobody else.”

What do Jesus’ words mean for us today?

Have you ever gotten into one of those situations that you just knew Satan was trying his best to trap you into doing something you knew was wrong? I know I have. He seems to know just what buttons to push for each of us. He knows the things that we like and dislike. He knows what makes us tick. He is an angel, a fallen one, but one of God’s created angelic beings nonetheless. So Satan has some powers that we do not understand or can even begin to comprehend.

So Satan knows exactly how best to approach us to entice us with the things that will turn us away from God. Satan had already tried to lure Jesus by trying to get Him to satisfy His physical desires through means Jesus knew were wrong. Now Satan asks Jesus to shortcut the path His Father had asked Him to take by worshiping Satan and thereby gaining political power over the world. But Jesus also knew the shortcut didn’t meet the demands the Father asked of Him. And to worship a fallen angel, or an angel of any sort, would violate the Fathers command.

Satan knew this mission was a weak point for Jesus. Our Savior wants the whole world to bow to Him and recognize Him as Savior and Lord. But He wants everyone in the world to come to Him as Lord as their choice, not as a dictator with the political power to force them to do so. The shortcut Satan offered Him would not suffice. It took away the power of choice for God’s greatest creation and He would not do that. Nor would Jesus, the man, worship anyone other than the Father.

So when Satan pushes that sensitive button, when He offers something that would entice Him to get off the path His Father laid out for Him to follow, Jesus does something we should we should emulate often. Listen to those first few words again: “Get out of my face, Satan!”

When is the last time you uttered those words? When is the last time you even thought those words in your head? I think we’ve gotten so sophisticated in our understanding of scientific principles and knowledge of the universe that we forget there is a real heaven and a real hell. A real fallen angel the Bible calls Satan, the father of lies. We forget there is a created being who rebelled against God and is trying his best to capture our souls and turn us away from God, too.

We, in our modern, what we think as an intelligent world, forget that Satan still roams the earth like a lion seeking those he can devour.

The good news, though, is that Satan is weak compare to our God. And Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 10, “Any temptation you face will be nothing new. But God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can handle. But He always provides a way of escape so that you will be able to endure and keep moving forward.”

Our problem is two-fold. First, we don’t look for those ways of escape. We don’t look for the exit signs. We don’t try to get away from the temptation or do things to keep from getting into those situations in the first place. We too often just let Satan beat on us with those same temptations and think we can stand there and take it for as long as he can dish it out. We can’t. Remember, Satan knows which buttons to push. He knows our weak spots and those are the ones he will go after.

But sometimes, we just can’t find an exit, or there isn’t one. There wasn’t an exit for Jesus in the desert that day. He was there. Satan was right there in front of Him. Satan was doing his best to push Jesus’ buttons and get Him to take a shortcut, skip over the tough parts of His Father’s journey for Him, take the easy road to success. Jesus saw that He couldn’t leave that desert place quite yet, so He did the next best thing. Did you get it? He rebuked Satan with those very precious words that we just don’t use enough, “Get out of My face, Satan!”

So what do you think would happen if the next time you faced a really tough temptation you did what Jesus did and yelled, “Get out of my face, Satan!” I bet if you’re not alone, you’ll get some pretty strange looks, for one. But I also bet that whatever is going on around you will take a quick stutter step and give you an opportunity to get out of there pretty fast. It’s amazing what happens when you call a spade a spade. People don’t like the truth sometimes and when you’re in the middle of something you know is wrong and call it what it is, it’s amazing how many others you will help by lending them your strength and keeping them from going down that path, too.

Jesus teaches a great lesson for us, today. When the tempter comes, get ready with your response, “Get out of my face, Satan!” With Jesus on your side, he will.

Today’s Devotional

Matthew 27:11
Jesus was standing before the governor, Pilate.
Pilate: Are You the King of the Jews?
Jesus: So you say.

What do Jesus’ words mean for us today?

Now it’s morning. The priests have been awake all night getting their plans together to take Jesus and the right charges to Pilate to make sure an execution happened on this day. The charges must stand up to the scrutiny of their governor so the punishment was swift and permanent. These priests wanted Jesus out of their hair forever. So what charge could they bring. The only answer? Changes against the emperor himself. This Man talked about the kingdom of heaven, let’s tell Pilate Jesus says He claims He is King of the Jews and wants to overthrow Caesar. That will work!

The sun isn’t up yet, but days start early in Judea. The sun gets hot early so business starts well before the sun comes up and stops when it gets high in the sky. It’s just too hot to do much. So before the sun rises, the priests are at Pilate’s palace knocking on the door. They can’t come in because this is Gentile territory and they can’t dirty themselves by entering. They won’t have time for the cleansing ritual before the Sabbath. Servants go to find the governor who reluctantly comes to the porch to speak with these crazy Jews. He doesn’t understand their customs, but after being their for several years he has grown accustomed to them and grants an audience on their terms. He must keep peace with them if he is to keep favor with the emperor.

I can imagine the crazy conversation. “Pilate, we want you to kill this man for us.” “Why? What has He done?” “He says he wants to be king of our people, that is insurrection against Rome.” “Do you recognize Him as king?” “Well, no.” “Then what’s the problem?” “I thought you priests were the authority in this place. So what if He says He wants to be king? He isn’t and He’s just one man without an army. What do I care?” “But you don’t understand. He’s also called Himself God.” “So, at least you can see Him, you can’t even see the God you guys say you worship. What do I care about that?”

Finally, they convince Pilate to take the case. And He questions Jesus. I expect that conversation went well, too. We only get a few of the words spoken, but I expect there were a lot more than those recorded in Matthew.

“So, Jesus, these guys put your life in my hands. What do you have to say for yourself?” No answer. “They say you want to be king. Is that right?” No answer. “They say you think you’re a god. Do you think you’re a god?” No answer. “So, are you deaf and dumb? You do understand I have the power to set you free, don’t you?” No answer. “Listen. You seem like a nice enough guy. I’ve heard you’re doing some good things for people out in the community. Why don’t you just fall in line with these priests of yours. Things will go a lot smoother for both of us. What do you say?” No answer. “Your refusal to talk to me isn’t getting you very far. I can have you executed on the spot if I want. You know that, don’t you?” No answer.

I think their conversation went on for a while like that. Eventually Pilate got tired of the questions with no answers and asked a final time. “Are You the King of the Jews?” Jesus answers, “So you say.” Notice it’s still Pilate’s words. Jesus is the King of kings, but it’s Pilate’s acclamation, not Jesus’ that brings His condemnation. But with those words, Pilate turns Him over to the crowd. He tries to wash his hands of the affair, but he, as is each of us, is culpable in Jesus death on the cross.

So what do we learn from this exchange? Once again we see Jesus is silent before His accuser. There is no need for argument. As victor over sin and death and the grave, Jesus needs no defense. He has already won the victory. Jesus won His personal human struggle in the Garden of Gethsemane. He was about to win the cosmic struggle over sin in just a few hours. Defense just wasn’t required. He was on the offense now. It might not look like it from the world’s perspective, but that didn’t matter and Jesus knew it. The battle was won!

When we understand that when we are on His side, we are part of the victory team. We don’t need to defend the faith, we just need to live it. We don’t need to argue our position, we just need to stand on the truth of God’s word. We don’t need to cower in the face of the enemy, the battle is already won. The enemy has already been defeated. He just doesn’t know it yet. God has won! When we believe in Him, we are victorious, too. Defense? Not anymore. We’re on the offense and the very gates of hell cannot stand against the church on the offensive. Jesus didn’t argue. We don’t need to either.
