  1. Thanks for joining me today for “A Little Walk with God.” I’m your host Richard Agee.
  2. Secrets are something Jesus reached inside others and made known. He didn’t seem to have any Himself. Maybe we should follow suit.
  3. Scripture
    1. John 18:20-21
    2. Jesus: I have spoken in public where the world can hear, always teaching in the synagogue and in the temple where the Jewish people gather. I have never spoken in secret. So why would you need to interrogate Me? Many have heard Me teach. Why don’t you question them? They know what I have taught.
  4. Devotional
    1. I’ve taken several oaths in my life.
      1. As an Army officer to support and defend the Constitution
      2. To my wife
      3. In court, to tell the truth
      4. In various legal situations attesting to my identity or the truth of some legal document
      5. All those oaths are public record or can be
    2. I’ve never belonged to one of those secret societies. And I don’t want to.
      1. Oaths behind closed doors.
      2. Teachings that you must reach certain levels before you are allowed to hear what the next level knows
      3. Secrets about beliefs and activities
      4. Secrets about loyalties and how deep those loyalties extend
    3. That’s what I like about Jesus’ testimony to the high priest
      1. Wasn’t trying to be flippant
      2. Wasn’t trying to be rude or arrogant
      3. Just stating fact
      4. Everything He did was in the open for all to see
      5. Even His prayers were open enough for His disciples to overhear and record them for us later in the gospels
    4. Beware of those religions that hide behind secrets
      1. Jesus had no secrets
      2. Everything He did, He did in the open for all to hear
      3. I think He tells us to do the same
      4. We have nothing to hide when we follow His command and His example
      5. It’s true many have died because of His teaching, but so did He
    5. What did He teach that cost His life?
      1. God wants a personal relationship with each of us
      2. Only one relationship never ends, think about it
      3. Everyone you enter into a relationship with will die or move or things change that change the relationship
      4. Every relationship with anything or anyone terrestrial will end
      5. Only a relationship with God can last
      6. Only He is immortal and relates with our immortal soul
  5. If you want to learn more about my church, you can find us at SAF.church. If you like the devotional, share it with someone. If you don’t, tell me. I hope you’ll join me again tomorrow for “A Little Walk with God.”

Today’s Devotional

Luke 11:9-10
Jesus So listen: Keep on asking, and you will receive. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened for you. All who keep asking will receive, all who keep seeking will find, and doors will open to those who keep knocking.

What do Jesus’ words mean for us today?

Aren’t those great words from Jesus we’re considering today? Keep asking and you’ll receive. Keep seeking, and you’ll find. Keep knocking and the door will be opened for you. Just keep on and it will happen for you. Be persistent.

We have a problem in today’s society, though. We have too many fast food restaurants. We have get too many television channels. We have 24 screen movie theaters. We have 300 mega bit per second download service at home. We have interstates with 70 and 75 mile per hour speed limits. We fly across the country in jets traveling at near super sonic speeds. We have meals ready to pop in the microwave and whole sections at the grocery with vegetables and fruits already pealed and sliced for us. Our cars even start before we get to them and the doors unlock a few feet before our arrival so we don’t have to worry about fussing with keys. Everything is instant.

We want what we want now. I can’t wait until tomorrow. I need it now. Amazon has made a fortune because they can deliver anything in two days. Even on Saturday and Sunday thanks to UPS and the Post Office agreeing to our unreasonable demands for instant delivery of those things we just have to have now. We are an incredible society, aren’t we? What ever happened to patience? Isn’t that one of those virtues we’re supposed to be developing as Christians?

God, you mean I have to ask twice, or even three times for something? You mean I have to look in more than one place for the thing I’m seeking from you? You mean I might have to wait for the blessings you want to give me? I don’t know about this. I don’t know if I’m ready for this faith thing that says I have to be patient and wait on God’s timing. How do I know He’ll answer if He doesn’t answer my prayers right now? Doesn’t He know I have a life I need to get on with? I don’t need to be wasting my time asking twice or three times for the same thing, do I?

How much do we miss because of our impatience? What does God want to do for us that we let slip past us because we are just not willing to spend the time and effort persistently seeking God’s will and going to Him in prayer seeking His will? What opportunities go untouched because we just don’t slow down enough to see them or pull the door handle once and find it closed and never try the door again?

Jesus told us to ask and keep on asking. He told us to seek and keep on seeking. He told us to knock and keep on knocking. How long are we supposed to keep up those efforts? Until our prayers are answered. Sometimes God does say no, but so often in our Google search, instant answer world, if He doesn’t give us what we asked for within ten minutes of our prayer, we assume the answer is no when God hasn’t answered yet.

Sometimes God takes His time answering and we don’t like that much, but God’s time is perfect. Sometimes He does say no, but sometimes, He says yes, but on His timeline, not ours. Remember time means nothing to God. He existed before time began and that wristwatch you wear means nothing to Him. His days are not measured in minutes and hours and days. His time expands across eternity and just can’t be measured in any way.

So if God waits a day or a week or a month or a year to answer your prayer, what’s that to Him in terms of time? It means nothing to Him, only to us. He still cares, but sometimes He uses that space that that we measure by the ticking of the clock to help us get to know Him and ourselves a little better. Sometimes He lets us mature and understand His ways a little more before He gives us what we ask for our lets us find what we are looking for or opens that door we’re knocking on.

However, the promise is still true. God does answer our prayers. Keep on asking, and you will receive. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened for you. All who keep asking will receive, all who keep seeking will find, and doors will open to those who keep knocking. Jesus made that promise to His disciples and if you belong to Him, you are one of His disciples.

Today’s Devotional

Luke 8:16-18
Jesus: You wouldn’t light a lamp and cover it with a clay pot. You’re not going to hide it under your bed. No, when you light it, you’re going to put it out in the open so your guests can feel welcome and see where they’re going.
Hidden things will always come out into the open. Secret things will come to light and be exposed. I hope you’re still listening. And I hope you’re listening carefully. If you get what I’m saying, you’ll get more. If you miss My meaning, even the understanding you think you have will be taken from you.

What do Jesus’ words mean for us today?

Jesus’ words remind me of just how powerful and important light is to us. I remember a time when I was in ROTC in college, a buddy and I were on a scouting mission together. We got just a little off track and thought we would get out of the woods and onto some more familiar territory by using a railroad track that bisected the area that enclosed the training area we were supposed to occupy. When we got to the track we decided we would head toward a red signal light we saw in the distance.

Because it was a dark night with no moon, heavy cloud cover, and a light rain falling, we had trouble making out any of the land formations around us. That’s what got us a little disoriented in the first place and caused us to lose our pace count and direction. So when we saw the light in the distance we figured we would be safe and on track once more. We headed that direction.

We didn’t realize then just how far you can see a railroad signal light in the dark. We were accustomed to seeing flashlights and car headlights in the dark. You can see a flashlight a few hundred yards and headlights a mile or so in the weather we were experiencing. But a signal for the railroad? Two hours later at a fairly brisk jog, we seemed no closer to that light than when we started. By then, we knew we were well out of the boundaries of the training area we were supposed to stay in. In fact, we might have even left the installation at that point, but really didn’t know without any landmarks to guide us.

After another hour of moving toward that light, we finally arrived and spent the rest of the night next to that railroad signal. We found out just how bright and how tall those things are. We also felt a lot more secure knowing we would be able to pinpoint our location once the sun came up using that signal along and the terrain around us. We could make it back to our camp from there. We blew the mission. We were embarrassed. But that light helped us make it home. We were happy to have it at 1:30 that morning 45 years ago. I’m so thankful that light was burning and not hidden from view.

Light does that for us. It dispels the darkness and gives us comfort on the darkest nights. It gives us hope and encouragement when it seems there is otherwise none to be had. Light is something we seek and it draws us when we find ourselves in darkness. It pulls us toward it because light tries to bring out the detail we want to see around us. Light comforts us.

But it also reminds us of the second part of the words we’re considering today. “Hidden things will always come out into the open.”

How often have you groped around in the dark for something and then with the flick of a switch, you turn on the light and there the item is right in front of you. I do it all the time. Unfortunately, I’m one of those that need a CPAP or BiPAP when I sleep at night because I have a tendency to stop breathing periodically. But I often put the contraption on in the dark since it’s really easy to operate and I’ve been using it for over ten years. The problem is that it does have a few parts that fit together and if one of those parts happen to slip off, many times I can’t find it in the dark no matter how hard I try. But as soon as I turn the lamp on the nightstand on, I can instantly see that part that lies just beyond my pitiful attempts to find it without that light. Light brings out the hidden things.

The same is true of our lives. Just look at the vitriol that pours out during this political campaign. Look at the candidates’ hidden lives that are coming out in the media on both sides of the aisle. Those evils each have committed are being flashed through the news, twitter, Facebook, and every other electronic media available. Little about their lives over their entire lifetime is being hidden from public view. Even all those alleged sexual assaults from the Republican candidate and the email trail that is shows the selling of favors to our enemies on the part of our Democratic candidate while Secretary of State. Nothing is hidden.

But think of what the final judgment will be like. Not even our thoughts will be hidden on that day. God will expose every act and every thought for the whole world to see. The only question after that display is whether all those acts of disobedience have been forgiven through your repentant prayer. How about it?
